Metagaming

Metagaming is the deliberate violation of informational security in a player-created storyline. This violation focuses specifically on the illicit transfer and use of information between multiple players. Metagaming mainly occurs when a player obtains external knowledge (information your lore character does not know, which was obtained through illicit private channels or other means) into the game environment or uses said information, obtained within the game environment, to go beyond the natural limits set by the game and distribute information past their realistic capability to.

Illicit information can be spread through any means of communication. Known as the “lore-everywhere” clause, any method of communicating illegal information can be prosecuted as metagaming. This includes means of communication including, but not limited to DMs (Direct Messages), private group chats, and other servers, private or otherwise.

This information can be portrayed through various means such as text, pictures, and videos. The transmission of screenshots, videos, or other multimedia content from in-game during a permanent death event or of concepts related to lore is considered as an act of metagaming. Cases of metagaming can be as simple as learning the perpetrator of a murder from the person killed to a video of a crime being committed in-game under Permanent Death circumstances being uploaded and used as evidence in an in-game court.

One explicit rule that stems from the concept of metagaming is “dead-men-tell-no-tales”. This regulation explicitly states that if you die in a Permanent Death event, information your character learned is considered to be lost. Because of this, the knowledge that you transmit or reuse from any previously dead characters would be considered as an act of metagaming, because your new character after death would not have the knowledge of the one that died. As a corollary to this regulation, information gained in said permanent death events can only be transmitted if you survive the event in question.

In addition to simply transferring information illicitly, metagaming can also involve external, third-party factors. External relationships, like potential romantic relations, or simply the status of being friends or enemies cannot impact your decisionmaking in regards to in-lore AoT:U actions. It is also not allowed to exchange any financial or monetary favors in exchange for in-lore actions or information.

  Disciplinary guidelines:

  • First-time violations of external-relationship related metagaming should be punished with a general ban between fourteen and forty-five days for prime actors (defined as those proactively actively seeking to metagame) and seven to twenty-one days for accomplices. Permanent bans should be considered starting at the second offense.

Nonparticipant staff members overseeing a permanent death event may make extraordinary hosting decisions about said events with any cause, including those not included in the Binding Ruleset in order to prevent instances of metagaming and to maintain lore integrity.

Metagaming carries serious consequences and penalties for offenders. All players are required to cooperate with staff members investigating for metagaming under any circumstances. Harboring witnesses or information about those who metagame is also grounds for being punished under metagaming restrictions. Staff have full discretion for the nature and duration of violating this principle, but permanent bans and bans of over thirty days are not uncommon.

     Disciplinary guidelines:

  • First-time violations of dead-men-tell-no-tales should be punished with a general ban between seven and fourteen days, with progressive time increases up to forty-five days. Permanent bans should be considered starting at the second offense.
  • Those orchestrating larger conspiracies involving organized metagaming between one or more persons should be punished with a general ban between twenty-one and forty-five days, with a permanent ban under consideration on the first offense.
  • Accomplices to metagaming should be punished with progressive general bans between three and twenty-one days based on involvement and participation, with permanent bans under consideration starting from the third offense.
  • Harboring information from staff or otherwise not disclosing information about potential metagaming or metagamers should be punished with progressive general bans between seven and twenty-one days, with permanent bans under consideration starting from the second offense.

It’s also important to note here that spreading false information is not a violation of metagaming principles. The act of spreading false information is not in violation of metagaming so long as those spreading the information are doing so explicitly with the intent to misinform or otherwise deceive others.

Voice chats present a uniquely imminent danger for metagaming to occur. In order for the staff team to accurately verify that information was communicated through voice channels, both parties (speaker and recipient) must honestly confirm to staff if requested of them saying information in order for it to be counted as valid in the context of lore.

An exemption to default metagaming provisions is applied in online videos: it is legal to post any video that does not contain highly private events in a Permanent Death setting online. We encourage that video content creators be given a free hand when spreading the word about Attack on Titan: Universe events. However, said videos cannot be used as proof or justification for future events.
